Who’s Really Creating Struggle Porn?

Like most issues, this one is more nuanced than it appears.

  • I appreciate that “struggle porn” is real and detrimental.
  • I appreciate GaryVee’s efforts to give people the push they need.

But, like anything done well — The GaryVee Experience is not for everyone. It’s focused on a certain type of person who needs what he’s preaching. And given the outsized response, I do think they benefit.

Where it falls down, and can become dangerous, is in two areas:

  1. Execution. Grinding away at a business to wear a struggle badge is dumb.
  2. Mimicry. You won’t ever *be* GaryVee and that’s the wrong goal anyway.

I think Gary himself would say the same things. I do believe he’s earnest and makes a real effort to connect with his peeps. What more can you ask of him?

The Mimics, however, chant the slogans and exalt the struggle. They take the message out of context and go only as deep as they need to to serve themselves. They backslap and fist bump and benchpress buzzwords.

This is where the struggle porn comes from. Those who take the message and pervert it — so they can call themselves an entrepreneur rather than showing up to serve instead. And listen, we all fall prey to that sometimes, right? The work is often hard, and we have to give ourselves extra “perks” to be able to keep going.

But can we really hold Gary accountable for this? He’s just a guy living his own path, being generous in sharing his experience, and showing up to serve. Big time.

But again, it’s not for everyone. For me, I was an early follower of GaryVee, but I find that I can’t listen in anymore. It felt like Facebook to me — any time I spend with it, I feel worse about myself. That’s my own fault though.

I’ll bet Gary would accept that with grace, but the Mimics would probably call me weak. Not driven enough. Not willing to put in the work. But what’s the point of running your own business if it doesn’t make you (and those around you) healthier and happier?

I don’t get it right either, but I’ll try again this week.

I wish the same for you as well, with love and respect.
