There was an episode of the Simpsons called “Attack of the 50-Foot Eyesores” where Lisa Simpson came up with a potential remedy for being Trumpnotized. In this episode, unrelenting ads come to life and begin to literally ransack their town of Springfield. Lisa’s plan was to to cut off the source for their power: Attention. She even got a little help from Paul Anka in the form of a jingle called “Just Don’t Look” to help people resist the urge to rubberneck. It worked. The monsters, starved of oxygen-rich attention, all died. Happily ever after.
Can we do the same, or are we past that point? The Narcissist has a deep need for attention, in all its forms. Everything from lavish praise to indignant outrage.
What if we gave him the gift of indifference instead?
Given his crusade of “gratuitous cruelty,” quoting Roger Cohen in “The Abnormal Presidency of Donald Trump,” we can’t afford to look away entirely. There are too many people at risk. More bitter residue from 100% Media Saturation.
But could we use strategic indifference instead?
Here are three potential solutions:
- Hit Him in the Twitter
- Take the Podium Away
- The Firefighter’s Solution
