A Gentle Reminder to Stop Scrolling Once in a While
I’m never really sure what each platform is for — especially when they are changing so frequently… and rapidly. TikTok’s ascendance seems to have scared the crap out of all the other social apps, and they all seem to be moving from “social graph” to “content graph.”
So I ask: Do people want to find new music on Medium?
Here’s an excerpt of something that got played nearly 24K times on Pinterest, of all places — so I figured I put it here and see what happens:
Did you click? Or is this not the place? I am genuinely interested.
Mixing Pop & Politics
I suppose I should introduce myself. My name is Michael Boezi and I have been writing and playing music for 30+ years. I was lit up by the energy and ethos of the post-punk era, and have been playing music ever since.
I perform regularly in the metro Boston area in a busking, “electric folk” Billy Bragg style — and in a band format too. My recordings have a fuller sound to them, while retaining the singer-songwriter feel. As a writer, I want the lyrics to always be front and center. I get compared to Kurt Vile, Andrew Bird, Johnny Marr, Elvis Costello, Mountain Goats, Lord Huron, Eels, R.E.M., Dire Straits, and Richard Thompson.
This set of songs is available on all the disreputable streaming platforms, and they feature some of the Boston area’s best musicians. Here’s a playlist so you can hear them yourselves.
The pandemic was a wake-up call for me, and made me take my music more seriously. I started writing, recording, and producing a new set of singles pointed at progressive social change. I try to avoid being strident, but to invite reflection instead. To use the privilege I have to shine a light on what I’ve learned… and especially what I’ve unlearned.
You Are a Part of the Songwriting Process
I’ve also been releasing a series of “process shots” to pull back the curtain on my songwriting. You can find these on YouTube and TikTok. It’s allowed me to get feedback on new material before I take them out on stage. Involving actual fans has really helped my writing and editing process.
The algorithms will try to keep us apart because this is what those in power fear the most — that we learn from each other’s experiences. So I’m happy you’re here today. Positive change is a collective effort and individualism is our common enemy. https://michaelboezi.com/music
